Dominik Gershkovich (2004) is a pianist and composer from Leipzig who combines musical narrative power with stylistic openness. His artistic journey began early—initially less out of his own initiative than through his parents’ encouragement. What started as an obligation evolved over the years into a personal necessity: music transformed from a school subject into a means of expression.
He received his classical training at the “Johann Sebastian Bach” Music School. There, he was particularly influenced by his teacher, Konstanze Orgass. She not only gave him a solid technical and tonal foundation, but also a lasting understanding of artistic approach, expression, and personal development. Competitions such as “Jugend musiziert” earned him high honors early on and demonstrated that there was more to his musical work than mere practice. At the same time, he began to feel a growing inner distance from the exclusively classical world—the search for freedom, spontaneity, and his own musical language had begun.
A decisive turning point came in 2019 with his move to the Popakademie. There, his jazz piano teacher at the time, Janusz Wozniak, became an important artistic mentor. He opened up new perspectives for Gershkovich on improvisation, sound thinking, and musical identity—going far beyond purely instrumental considerations. During this phase, his classical musical background increasingly blended with modern harmony, pop influences, and cross-genre work. Starting in 2021, his focus shifted more and more toward jazz, improvisation, and musical interaction.
Today, Gershkovich views improvisation as a narrative process. For him, music becomes a space where images emerge, atmospheres take shape, and emotional situations become audible. When he plays, he thinks in terms of scenes, memories, and inner images that unfold in the moment. Especially in his original compositions, personal experiences blend with sonic dramaturgy.
His artistic approach is characterized by honesty rather than perfection. He views mistakes as part of human development—in life as well as in music. Personality, humor, depth, and surprise are allowed to shine through. The focus is not on flawless execution, but on authenticity in the moment.
His playing is characterized by a distinct sense of sound and a wide dynamic range—from tender intimacy to powerful energy—all underpinned by the tonal control honed through his classical training. Stylistically, he moves fluidly between swing, groove, straight eighth notes, and free improvisation. Central to all of this is a quality he himself considers essential: listening—both in musical dialogue and in life.
Since 2023, he has been studying jazz piano at the Leipzig University of Music and Theatre under Michael Wollny and Frank Chastenier. As a member of the German National Jazz Orchestra (BuJazzO) and the leader of his own ensembles, including the Gershkovich Trio and Quintet, he moves between modern jazz, funk, and free improvisation. He views his music as an emotional space in which stories unfold.
